Technical Specifications:
Released in October of 1990, the Macintosh Classic was Apple’s first attempt at a low cost oriented personal computer. Obsolete long before its release, the Classic used a slow 8 MHz processor and could use a maximum of 4 megabytes of RAM. Because of its starting price of $999 (unheard-of for an Apple), the Mac Classic’s
poor technology was ignored. It was popular in educational institutions because of its low price and small footprint. The Classic had many features found in no other Apple models. One of the most unique was that the Classic could boot up from an operating system imbedded in its ROM. By pressing the command-option-x-o keys together during startup, the Classic will quickly boot into System 6.0.3. The Classic was also the only compact Mac to not feature a screen brightness control knob (display brightness was controlled by software via a preference panel in the Mac OS after System 7). The Mac Classic was also the last compact Mac Apple made (excluding the Color Classic, that had an entirely new design). Because of its success, it was continued a year later with the Macintosh Classic II.
