Technical Specifications:
Released in September 1989, the Macintosh portable was Apple’s first battery operated mobile computer. It had a unique design, unlike any other portable PC. It was equal in processing power to the Mac II, and was available with a special 40 megabyte hard drive designed specifically for low power use. The Portable ran off of a large lead-acid battery that provided 12 hours of use on
a single charge, a record yet to be broken by any modern laptop. It used an un-backlit 9 inch active matrix LCD screen. Because of it’s advanced features, the Mac Portable sold for $6,500 without a hard drive and over 7000 with one, limiting it’s market to mainly businesses and professionals. It’s high price and large size eventually persuaded Apple to replace it with the cheaper and smaller Powerbooks.
